Scaling and root planing are a more in-depth, thorough cleaning treatment recommended for patients who may be suffering from periodontal disease. Also known as gum disease, this type of gum infection is caused by bacteria and plaque forming on your teeth over time and causing inflammation. While serious, periodontal disease is treatable. However, it can lead to bone or tooth loss if not treated quickly.

When your gums become inflamed, bacteria hides in pockets that trigger the gums to pull away from the teeth. Once these pockets have formed, it’s nearly impossible to clean them with brushing alone. This is where scaling and root planing becomes necessary. During the scaling portion of this conventional periodontal therapy, our team uses a scaling tool to remove plaque, bacteria, and tartar around the affected tooth and below the gumline all the way to the bottom of the infected pocket.

After the scaling is complete, we move on to root planing. The root planing technique is used to smooth out the tooth’s root and ultimately remove the pocket caused by bacteria. Once the root has been effectively smoothed, the gums can reattach and have a greater chance of fully healing.

Some patients report mild discomfort during the procedure and increased sensitivity after treatment is complete, but with a personalized treatment plan, we can help manage any discomfort. Moving forward, practicing good oral hygiene is essential to make sure periodontal disease doesn’t worsen after seeking initial treatment at our office.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is scaling and root planing?

It’s a deep cleaning treatment that removes plaque, bacteria, and tartar from below the gumline, then smooths the tooth root to help gums reattach and heal.

Why can’t regular brushing clean these areas?

Once inflamed gums form pockets where bacteria hide, brushing alone can’t reach deep enough to clean them, which is why scaling and root planing is necessary.

Is scaling and root planing painful?

Some patients report mild discomfort during the procedure and increased sensitivity afterward, which can be managed with a personalized treatment plan.

What happens if periodontal disease is left untreated?

It can lead to bone or tooth loss if not treated quickly, which is why early intervention with scaling and root planing is important.

What happens after the scaling and root planing procedure?

Practicing good oral hygiene afterward is essential to help ensure the disease doesn’t progress further.

What if my gum disease is more advanced?

We may discuss further options like LANAP laser treatment or gum grafting depending on your needs.
